Chapter 16: Shirk

The last thing I want to do is leave Quin alone at all. Seeing her cry last night was one of the worst things I’ve had to deal with in a long time. After Ptero asked for her help in the trailer though, I wasn’t able to make sure she was going to laugh and smile today as much as I wanted. Instead, coffee sounded like the next best plan and I went into the motor home. While it percolates, I open up my guitar case and pull out the notebook, flipping to the back out of habit. Everyone else is still mostly asleep besides Freddy who turns over and over in his sleep.

WALK TODAY looms up at me in the dim lighting. There are so many things I want to accomplish today and more than half of them involve Quin. But Quin wasn’t the only one I found crying yesterday. Freddy had been sitting on the bed, his hands covering his face, upset about something Steg had said. He’d tried telling me between his crying, but I’m still not sure what it was that went down between them. Using my pen, I write in a tiny empty white space towards the bottom of the page: Listen through F’s music and deal with it.

“Shirk?” Freddy sits up from the bed and runs his hands through his hair. “Where have you been all night?”

“I slept somewhere else.” I pick up my guitar and pluck a few strings. “Did you want to work on that music? I think the venue is open for the start of set up and we could go plug in the synth somewhere if not on the stage yet.”

He coughs into his arm and leans forward, resting his head in his hands. “Really?”

“Sure.” I shrug.

“If you’re going to share your coffee, I’ll take you up on that, bro.” He nods to himself and slowly gets up, changing into a different shirt that isn’t wrinkled.

I look back down at the notebook. I didn’t write that I had to accept his music. I just had to listen to it.
